presidentti
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Swedish president, from Old French president, from Latin praesidēns (literally “sitting in front”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]presidentti
- president (head of state or chairperson)
Usage notes
[edit]When talking about presidents of Finland, the title presidentti on its own is used of a former president, while the title of the current president is tasavallan presidentti. This is not entirely rigorous, and occasionally presidentti is used as the title for the current president as well, especially in e.g. headlines to make them shorter.
