Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Internationalism (see English predicate), ultimately from Late Latin praedicātum.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈpredikɑːtːi/, [ˈpre̞diˌkɑ̝ːt̪ːi]
  • Rhymes: -ɑːtːi
  • Hyphenation(key): pre‧di‧kaat‧ti

Noun

[edit]

predikaatti

  1. (grammar) predicate
  2. (logic) predicate

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The exact definition of a predikaatti in Finnish grammar has several different interpretations. One interpretation is similar to the English predicate, while another one postulates that the predicate in the sentence Koira haukkui erittäin äänekkäästi (The dog barked very loudly) is only haukkui (barked) and not haukkui erittäin äänekkäästi (barked very loudly).
