[edit]Derived from Ancient Greek πόα (póa, “grass”) + φυτόν (phutón, “plant”). By surface analysis, poa + -phyte.

- A plant that grows best in grass-covered meadows.
- 1905, Journal of Botany, British and Foreign[1], Robert Hardwicke, page 335:
- Passing through the heliophilous poads and poophytes, we arrived at a forewold abounding in driodads and sciophytes, the cyriodoche of the latter being somewhat interfered with by pyrium and ecballium; further on, hylads, hylodads, and hylophytes diversified the scene.
