[edit]Inherited from Vulgar Latin pullicella, of disputed origin. Possibly a diminutive of Latin pullus (“young of animals, chick”). Alternatively from Latin puella (“girl”) through a Vulgar Latin root *puellicella. Cognate with French pucelle.
