Etymology

From Vulgar Latin potēre, regularization of Latin posse. Once the intervocalic /-t-/ lenited to zero, an /-l-/ was added to break hiatus, likely by analogy with voleur (to want). Compare the /-v-/ added to the French cognate pouvoir (< early medieval poeir).
