[edit]From Middle Low German pocke (“boil, abscess”), from Proto-Germanic *pukkaz, *pukkǭ (“pock; swelling”), cognate with English pock, pox, German Pocke. Maybe kopper (“smallpox”) is a euphemistic refashioning of this word.
