[edit]Via Middle Low German plātze and Old French place from Latin platēa, a loan from Ancient Greek πλατεῖα (plateîa), substantive of πλατύς (platús, “broad”). The Low German form was also borrowed to Late Old Norse plaz and Swedish plats.
