[edit]From Latin plangere (compare Italian piangere, French plaindre, Portuguese planger and Romanian plânge).
Perhaps a semi-learned form; cf. also an old Spanish llañer (having expected phonetic development) with attested forms llangamos and llangan [1][2][3][4] as well as plañer, which was modified with a conjugation change into the current form.
