Etymology

From Middle High German blēren, blerren. Comparable and possibly cognate with Dutch blaren, whence English blare. Eventually of onomatopoeic origin.

  1. (of babies, sometimes animals) to cry or weep in a shrill and continuous manner
  2. to sing unmelodiously or cacophonously
  3. (of radios, etc.) to blare, to produce sound loudly and piercingly
