[edit]Borrowed from English peanut, compound of pea + nut. English pea is a backformation of pease, originally an uncountable noun meaning "peas" that was construed as a plural, ultimately from Ancient Greek πίσον (píson). English nut is from Middle English nute, note, from Old English hnutu, from Proto-Germanic *hnuts (“nut”), from Proto-Indo-European *knew-.
