[edit]From *pilkkV + -o. Akin to Finnish pilkko-.
The initial component is of unknown origin:
- Possibly related to Finnish pilkottaa (“to be in sight”), itself from a Germanic language.
- Alternatively, perhaps also found in pilkkinenä (“having a white snout”).
