pieno
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]A hypercorrection: in many dialects, a Standard Finnish diphthong ie becomes either iä or ia according to vowel harmony, making some people think that whenever one is tempted to say ia in the first syllable, it should be replaced with ie in formal speech. May also secondarily be a phono-semantic matching with pieni (“small”).
