penikuorma
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Possibly a phonetic deformation of the synonymous peninkulma.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]penikuorma (obsolete)
- A traditional measure of length equal to 10 versts.
- 1884, Theodolinda Hahnsson, Kotikuusen kuiskehia[1]:
- Kulkeneet he olivat lähes puolen penikuormaa; siinä oli jo kylläksi näin pienille lapsille.
- They have travelled for almost five versts, certainly enough for children so young.
Usage notes
[edit]A Finnish verst (virsta) is slightly longer (1068.8 meters) than the Russian equivalent верста (versta) (1066.8 meters), thus making the length of penikuorma 10.688 kilometers (= 6.64 miles), similarly to Swedish mil.
