[edit]Probably from Vulgar Latin *pedinus,[1][2] a derivative of Latin pedem (“foot”). Compare Sicilian pèdinu, Romanian piedin, Albanian pedim. Alternatively from Latin pendulus.[3] Less likely linked to penna / pinna (“feather”).[4]
