penalty loop (plural penalty loops)

  1. A branch of a racecourse that adds a loop that starts and ends at the branching point, to extend the course for use in penalizing competitors with extra distance to travel.
  2. A penalty assessed to competitors in a race, where they must race through a penalty loop branch of a racecourse.
