Etymology

The word was introduced into biology in the sense of champignon by botanist Jan Svatopluk Presl in 1846,[1] but existed already in Old Czech in the sense false hellebore (Veratrum) or "a plant, the roots of which can be roasted".[2] Comes from Proto-Slavic *pekti (bake),[2] which comes from Proto-Indo-European *pekʷ- (bake, cook).[3]
