From Proto-Malayic *payuŋ, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *payuŋ (compare Cia-Cia 빠우 (ppa'u), Tagalog payong).

The sense of "treating" is attested at least from 2015, popularize by the tagline jangan kata abang tak payung.
