Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Proto-Norse [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *ballô, *balluz.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈpɑlːo/, [ˈpɑ̝lːo̞]
  • Rhymes: -ɑlːo
  • Hyphenation(key): pal‧lo

Noun

[edit]

pallo

  1. ball, orb, sphere, globe (spherical object)
  2. (mathematics) sphere (see usage notes)
  3. (mathematics, now informal) ball (see usage notes)
  4. Ellipsis of ilmapallo (balloon).

Usage notes

[edit]

In mathematics, the term in informal use is mostly used interchangeably for sphere (the cross sections of which are circles) and ball (the cross sections of which are disks), although most authors usually use the term for only one of these concepts in literature, with an increasing tendency to use pallo to mean "sphere" and kuula to mean "ball" (further distinction may be made with pallopinta for the former).
