Ultimately from Portuguese palanquim, from Odia ପାଲଙ୍କି (pālaṅki), from Sanskrit पल्यङ्क (palyaṅka). Compare English and French palanquin, Italian palanchino, Polish palankin, Russian паланки́н (palankín).
