Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Sanskrit प्रति- (prati-).

Prefix

[edit]

paṭi-

  1. Verbal prefix:
    1. back (to)
    2. towards
    3. against, in opposition to, opposite

Usage notes

[edit]

Before vowels, the prefix normally occurs as the non-productive pacc- as a result of inheritance from -ty- cluster occuring due to Sanskrit sandhi. The choice between paṭi- and pati- is unrelated to meaning.
