owner-operator (plural owner-operators)

  1. Someone who both owns and operates a piece of equipment, especially a semi-trailer truck (articulated lorry). They are a contractor; they may be a commercial carrier, but most often they provide capacity (trucks and drivers, with or without trailers or chassis) to either commercial or private carriers as a subcontractor.
