[edit]From over (“over”) + sætte (“place, put, set”). Calque of Middle Low German oversetten and German übersetzen, itself probably a calque of New Latin trādūcō (“to lead across, translate”). Compare Swedish översätta and Norwegian Bokmål oversette.
