From Proto-West Germanic *augā, from Proto-Germanic *augô, whence also Old English ēage, Old Saxon ōga, Old Norse auga, Gothic 𐌰𐌿𐌲𐍉 (augō). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ- (eye; to see).
