From Middle Low German orsaken, equivalent of orsak (a cause) +‎ -a. Cognate with Danish årsage, Norwegian Bokmål forårsake, Norwegian Nynorsk forårsake, forårsaka, Middle Dutch orsaken, older Dutch oorzaken and older German ursachen.[1]
