1. (impersonal + genitive) to be obliged or supposed [with first infinitive ‘to’]

   Hän teki kuten hänen oli määrä.

   He did as he was obliged to do.

   Kokouksen oli määrä päättyä kahdelta.

   The meeting was supposed to end at two.

2. (impersonal + nominative) to be due [with first infinitive ‘to’]

   Se on määrä sulkea viiden vuoden sisällä.

   It is due to close within five years.

Conjugation

• This impersonal verb is always used in the third person singular, but may be inflected in tense (such as present or past) and mood (such as indicative or conditional). The 'subject' of the verb is inflected in the genitive case. To see the conjugated forms of the verb, see olla.
