Etymology

Inherited from Old Spanish oxalá, from Arabic وَشَاءَ ٱلله (wašāʔa llāh, and may God will it) or لَوْ شَاءَ ٱلله (law šāʔa llāh, if God wills it). Compare Arabic إنْ شَاءَ الله (ʔin šāʔa llāh).
