Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *ohta- + -ke, possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *ašta-.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]ohdake
Usage notes
[edit]In English common usage, the term thistle is used of prickly plants belonging to 15 genera (see: thistle). In Finnish plant names the use of ohdake is limited to genera Cirsium and Onopordum. Due to their resemblance to Cirsium, also plants belonging to genera Carduus (karhiainen), Carlina (kurho) and Arctium (takiainen) are often called ohdake in everyday language.
