From Proto-West Germanic *obarlaggjan, from Proto-Germanic *uberlagjaną, equivalent to ofer- +‎ leċġan. Cognate with Old Frisian overledza, ūrledza, Old High German ubarleggen, Gothic 𐌿𐍆𐌰𐍂𐌻𐌰𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ufarlagjan).
