Etymology

[edit]

Compound of nuor- (young) +‎ suomalainen (Finnish), from Nuorsuomalainen puolue (the Young Finnish Party), a Finnish political party registered in 1894, originally born as reformist movement within the Suomalainen puolue (the Finnish Party). The party disappeared from the political map in 1918, when it divided into two fractions. A new party with the same name was founded in 1994 but died out already in 1999. That party was known in English as the Young Finns.
