Related to nifl (darkness), and to the German Nebel (fog) (Old High German nebul) and Dutch nevel (fog), from Proto-Indo-European *nébʰos ( > Ancient Greek νεφέλη (nephélē, cloud, mist), Latin nebula (mist, fog)).
