[edit]Etymology
[edit]Lexicalization of an earlier nej-, neɣ- stem of nő (“woman; [archaic] wife”) + -e (possessive suffix).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]neje
- third-person singular single-possession possessive of nő, one’s wife (already incorporating the possessive suffix)
- Synonym: feleség
Usage notes
[edit]- For the possessive of nő in the sense “woman; female partner or lover, mistress”, see nője.
- If the incorporated possessive suffix is not required, feleség may be used instead. The term nő in the sense “wife” is archaic, while the form nej may be disputed. (For a similar case, see vej.)
