Inherited from Old Catalan nuvol, from Latin nūbilum (cloud), substantivization of Latin nūbilus (cloudy), an adjective based on Latin nūbēs (cloud), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)newdʰ- (to cover). Compare Occitan nívol, Spanish nublo.
