[edit]Superficially equivalent to nöd + torft, from Old Swedish nødhthorft. Arguably borrowed from Middle Low German nōtorft, nōttroft, from Old Saxon nōdthurft, from nōd (“need”) + thurft (“need”).
Related to Old Norse þurft, which is from Proto-Germanic *þurftiz. Cognate of Danish nødtørft, German Notdurft, Dutch nooddruft, Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐌿𐌳𐌹𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍆𐍄𐍃 (naudiþaurfts).
