Etymology

[edit]

musta (black) +‎ sukka (sock) +‎ -inen; in the sense "jealous", probably a reference to Swedish bära svarta strumpor, draga svarta strumpor (to be jealous, literally to wear black socks). According to some sources, a mistranslation of Swedish svartsjuk (jealous, literally black-sick), svartsjuka (jealousy), but this is less likely given word-for-word equivalents exist in Swedish (and possibly other languages); it is noteworthy that Swedish svartsjuk can be traced back to them as well.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈmustɑˌsukːɑi̯nen/, [ˈmus̠tɑ̝ˌs̠ukːɑ̝i̯ne̞n]
  • Rhymes: -ukːɑinen
  • Hyphenation(key): musta‧sukkai‧nen

Adjective

[edit]

mustasukkainen (comparative mustasukkaisempi, superlative mustasukkaisin)

  1. jealous (possessive, protective, suspecting rivalry in love)
    • 1892, Juhani Aho, “Vastamyrkky”, in Lastuja II, page 132:
»Sillä minä, minä olen mustasukkainen yleensä, ja se on minussa perisynti.»
"Since I, I am usually jealous, and that is my original sin."
    • 1972, Aila Meriluoto, Peter-Peter, →ISBN, page 57:
Siksi että Sinä et ole siellä minne menen (Sinunhan tässä kaiken järjen nimessä pitäisi olla mustasukkainen eikä minun!) — ja sitten rupean ajattelemaan missä Sinä oikeastaan olet ja mitä Sinä teet (...)
Because You are not there where I go (reason dictates You should be the one that is jealous, not me!) — and then I start thinking about where You actually are and what You are doing (...)
  2. (literally) black-socked, wearing black socks
