From Proto-Hmong-Mien *n-mɛj (to have), possibly related to Chinese  / (mǎi, to buy) and  / (mài, to sell) (and thus muas (to buy) and muag (to sell)), though the details are unclear. Cognate with Iu Mien maaih.[1]
