From Proto-Brythonic *moruɨn, from Proto-Celtic *morignā (compare Old Cornish moroin), from Proto-Indo-European *méryos (boy, girl) (compare Latin marītus (husband), Ancient Greek μεῖραξ (meîrax, girl, boy), Sanskrit मर्य (márya, young man; foal)). Related to merch.
