[edit]Learned borrowing from Latin mortiferum, derived from mors (“death”) + -fer (“-bearing, -carrying”), originally a calque of Ancient Greek θᾰνᾰτηφόρος (thanatēphóros, “deadly, lethal”, literally “death-bearing”). By surface analysis, morte + -ífero.
