From Old Swedish. Probably same root as mulen. According to SAOB, probably related to Danish mulm (darkness), Proto-Germanic *melhmô and Norwegian Nynorsk mol (small clouds) (used in parts of Trøndelag on the Swedish border, although Ivar Aasen doubt clarity of its etymology). Also compare Danish mul (rain cloud).
