[edit]Borrowed from Arabic مِسْكِين (miskīn, “poor”), from Classical Syriac ܡܶܣܟܸܐܢܳܐ / ܡܶܣܟܸܢܳܐ / ܡܶܣܟܸܝܢܳܐ (meskēnā, “miserable, wretched”), from Akkadian 𒈦𒆕𒂗 (muškēnum, “beggar, needy, indigent”).
