Etymology

From meso- (“middle”) + Ancient Greek ὕλη (húlē, “wood, timber, matter”) (whence English hyle).[1]

  1. The gelatinous matrix within a sponge, filling the space between the external pinacoderm and the internal choanoderm.[2]
