[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish مرتبه (mertebe, “a step, stair, a point of degree, rank, grade”),[1] from Arabic مَرْتَبَة (martaba, “step, rank, degree”), verbal noun of رَتَبَ (rataba, “to be firm, to stand unmoved”).[2]
