Etymology

From Proto-West Germanic *mariswīn. Equivalent to meri (sea) +‎ *swīn (pig). Cognate with Old High German meriswīn (dolphin). Compare also Dutch zeevarken (porpoise), from zee (sea) +‎ varken (pig).
