[edit]Etymology
[edit]Either from:
- *mararja, from Byzantine Greek *μαράθριον (*maráthrion), diminutive of Ancient Greek μάραθρον (márathron), μάραθον (márathon).
- Alternatively, from a Vulgar Latin derivative of the same Ancient Greek word: compare Latin marathrum. Related to Romanian mărar and perhaps to Old Church Slavonic молотрь (molotrĭ, “fennel”).
- A part of a series of loan words from unattested ancient greek dialects labeled as Macedonian because it was akin to the native idiom of the Greek-speaking population in the Argead Kingdom. borrowed as Ancient Macedonian *márathrion (cf Romanian marariu, Ionic márathron; with the Albanian simplification of -dri̯- to -j- reflecting that of earlier *udri̯om to ujë "water").[1]
