Etymology

Perhaps borrowed from Ukrainian макі́тра (makítra) or its etymon Old Ruthenian *макотъра (*makotra), ultimately from Greek μάκτρα (máktra, kneading trough, mortar). Reanalyzed[1] as mak (poppy) +‎ -u- +‎ trzeć (to grind) through folk etymology.
