Etymology

Inherited from Old Ruthenian *макотъра (*makotra), from мак (mak, poppy) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ терти (terty, to rub, to grate, to grind).

Compare Belarusian макацёр m (makacjór), макі́тра f (makítra) (the latter likely borrowed from Ukrainian or Polesian dialects), dialectal Polesian forms "макотра", "макутра", "макетра", "макытра".[1]
