[edit]Etymology
[edit]Probably ma⁵⁵ (“fruit”) + da³²², the later from Proto-Kra, from Proto-Kra-Dai. Cognate with A'ou [Bigong] zəɯ³³, Maonan ⁿda¹, Sui ndal, Thai ตา (dtaa), Proto-Be *ɗaːᴬ¹ (whence ɗa¹ in modern lects) and Proto-Hlai *ʈʂhaː (whence ʈʂhaː¹ in modern lects).
Compare the parallel construction in several Tai languages, such as Min Zhuang [Guixun-Anhe] mak¹¹ tʰa³⁵. Alternatively, there is also the possibility that this is a true disyllabic form (Miyake, 2021).
