[edit]From Proto-Nuclear Polynesian *maki (compare Maori maki, Tahitian maʻi),[1] from Proto-Polynesian *masaki (compare Maori mahaki, East Futuna masaki, Tongan mahaki), from Proto-Oceanic *masakit, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *sakit (compare Tagalog masakit, Malay sakit, Acehnese sakét).[2][3]
