[edit]From Ottoman Turkish مرلدی (mırıldı, “a grumbling”),[1] from Ottoman Turkish مرل (mırıl, “onomatopoeic for; a muttering, grumbling sound”), from Ottoman Turkish مر (mır, “onomatopoeic for; a murmur, murmuring, sound of a cat”),[2][3] morphologically mır + -ıl + -tı.
