[edit]A compound of m'neto (“supernatural being”) (from Proto-Algonquian *maneto·wa (“supernatural being”)) + kwe' (“woman”) (from Proto-Algonquian *eθkwe·wa (“(young) woman”)), because such people were considered to have supernatural spiritual power and wisdom.
