[edit]From Middle Welsh llwyddaw, from Proto-Celtic *ɸlēdeti (“to succeed”),[1] cognate with Proto-West Germanic *flītan (“to strive, fight”), conceivably from Proto-Indo-European *pleyd- (“to attempt”).[2]
